CHEM 1014 Fall 1999
- The InClass Problem Set has been changed
as of 9:50 pm Tuesday, November 11, 1999.
- Monday morning in laboratory one of the
students commented that the lecture notes do not print
out on a single page (wide). I'm not sure what I'm doing
that causes that. I'll try to figure it out. In the
meantime I reccomend students print in the Landscape mode
to get all the notes, width wise.
- I've talked to the two laboratory sections
on Wednesday to get some feedback on an idea that I have
for next week's Inclass Problem Set. It is covering
alkenes, alkynes and functional groups. I will give
students the option of doing the Inclass Problem Set over
the web. Those that choose to do it over the Web will
receive 5 extra credit points. You can still do the
problem set during discussion/laboratory next week, but
you will not receive the 5 extra credit points. This
means you will have to review the lecture notes to learn
about the functional groups on your own (you can still
ask me questions or send an e-mail). Lecture notes are
currently available (see Tuesday, November 23, 1999 lecture notes) on functional groups and I'm working on a
variation of these notes that will hold your hand a
little more. Check here for the link to the InClass
Problem set.
- We need to schedule a HELP Session for
Saturday, December 4, 1999 since our final exam is
scheduled for Monday, December 6, 1999 from 1:00 pm -
2:50 pm. Be sure to select 1014 as your course. Vote for a
time here! I'll report how
things are going as student input is accumulated.
- Check the web over the break, or before
class on Tuesday, I'll have an activity that you can do
to prepare yourself for functional groups. I think it
will be fun (Gelder speaking here not Geldar!)!
- Lecture notes on alkenes and alkynes are
posted. Notes on functional groups have also been posted.
If you have questions see me in my office or send an
e-mail. As much as I would like to spend more time
discussing alkanes, alkenes and alkynes, we need to
finish covering functional groups on Tuesday, and then
start discussing water. I suggest anyone who is uncertain
about alkenes or alkynes visit me during office hours. If
office hours do not work we can schedule an appointment.
Call or email.
- I hope everyone has a nice Thanksgiving.
Drive carefully.
- There was concern expressed in class today
about recognizing a double bond in a condensed formula,
and how to make the transition from a condensed formula
to a Lewis structure (read a condensed formula). I'll
have some notes up in the next day or so which should
help in that regard. No one came by to ask any questions
so I hope that I address all the issues with these
additional notes. If I miss something drop by my office
and I can help.
- The average on the third hour exam for
those students taking the exam was 60. The overall class
average is currently 71%. I would like it higher, and it
will go up when I drop the lowest laboratory and the two
lowest problem sets. The lastest grades are available at
the grades link. Exams will be returned in laboratory
this week.
- There is no time like now to start getting
ready for the final exam in our class. Find your hour
exams and start reviewing by looking at those questions
you did not do well on. A major portion of the final will
cover those questions from the first three hour exams
which students did poorly on. (Remember I assume if you
got it right on the hour exams you still know how to do
that kind of problem!) Where are the answers to the hour
exams? I'll have those posted soon. Check here!
- Remember on Tuesday, November 23, 1999 you
will do the lecture evaluation so be thinking of some
suggestions/comments. I particularly want comments about
the textbook, laboratory manual and the web.
- Students in laboratory on Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday this week (November 22 - 24) will be doing
Experiment #1 Crime Solving with Chemistry.
- It has been suggested that to view the
QuickTime movies, if your browser will not play them, to
right click on the quickTime icon and download the movie
and play it locally on your computer. Try that and see if
it works.
- Here is the link to get the QuickTime (for
Mac or PC) plugin.

- Here are the movies I shot in class. If
you sit on the right (dr. g's), in the center or on the left maybe you are in the video!
- You will receive your Secret Idenification
Code Number (SIC#) in laboratory beginning Monday,
September 20, 1999. I will begin posting the grades which
I have from the TA's next week on our web site. Be sure
to check the magnitude of all your scores to be sure the
values I have agree with the values you have. If there
are ANY differences see your TA with the graded
assignment that was recorded incorrectly.
Need some Help with your chemistry? The
Chemistry Department offers free tutoring in PS023
(basement of Physical Sciences). Check the Free Tutoring
link on the left for the hours. Note that those TA's
teaching CHEM 1014 are identified with the blue color.
Don't forget my office hours are 2:30 - 3:20 pm on T and
R.
