CHEM 1014 Fall 1999
- I've added a few more answers to the
original Review Problem Set for todays exam.
- Someone has reminded me that I did not ask
a question about molecular geometry/shape. So be sure to
determine the molecular geometry/shape for the compounds
in Problem 6 on the Review Problem.
- Here are a few more problems for
your review. This version contains all of the problems on
the earlier review problem set plus some additional ones.
- Figure 6.11 in the textbook showing the
Lewis structure of CO is WRONG! Carbon monoxide has a
lone pair on the carbon and on the oxygen atom and a
triple bond between the carbon and oxygen!
- We have a Help Session scheduled for 8:00
pm tonight (Tuesday, November 16, 1999) in PS141. My only
problem is I must go to OKC this late this afternoon. As
long as the plane arrives on time I will be here by 8:00
and at the latest 8:30 pm.
- I've listed those topics which the Exam
III will cover at the exams link.
- Here is this weeks version of the Survival Organic laboratory. Your TA will distribute it in laboratory, or
you can get yours early. Also the Review
PS for the exam was distributed
in lecture on Thursday. Answers will be available soon.
- I would appreciate any student(s) who are
concerned about the class to come in to talk to me in my
office, individually or in a small group if that makes
you feel more comfortable. I am always willing to listen,
in fact, I encourage students to come by. By doing so it
gives me a better perspective of how the class is going.
- Students in laboratory on Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday next week (November 22 - 24) will be doing
Experiment #1 Crime Solving with Chemistry.
- Remember my comments in laboratory about
the Survival Organic Chemistry. I will hold you
responsible for the alkanes, drawing structures, naming
compounds, drawing structural isomers. We will look at
the alkenes and alkynes, possibly we'll be there on
Thursday, but not to extent that we are doing alkanes.
For the functional groups discussed in the Survival
Organic Chemistry, I'll only expect you to be able to
recognize them and draw their structure in one or two
compounds. We will not be naming them or doing any
isomers.
- It has been suggested that to view the
QuickTime movies, if your browser will not play them, to
right click on the quickTime icon and download the movie
and play it locally on your computer. Try that and see if
it works.
- Here is the link to get the QuickTime (for
Mac or PC) plugin.

- Here are the movies I shot in class. If
you sit on the right (dr. g's), in the center or on the left maybe you are in the video!
- You will receive your Secret Idenification
Code Number (SIC#) in laboratory beginning Monday,
September 20, 1999. I will begin posting the grades which
I have from the TA's next week on our web site. Be sure
to check the magnitude of all your scores to be sure the
values I have agree with the values you have. If there
are ANY differences see your TA with the graded
assignment that was recorded incorrectly.
Need some Help with your chemistry? The
Chemistry Department offers free tutoring in PS023
(basement of Physical Sciences). Check the Free Tutoring
link on the left for the hours. Note that those TA's
teaching CHEM 1014 are identified with the blue color.
Don't forget my office hours are 2:30 - 3:20 pm on T and
R.
