  • For laboratory this week check out the Laboratory link. There is a Pre-Laboratory Assignment that must be complete! I handed out this week's laboratory in lecture on Friday, September 14th. If you did not receive a copy go to the laboratory link and print out the Draft version of the Survival Organic Chemistry Experiment.
  • Problem Set #3 is due on Wednesday, September 19, 2001. Help Session on Monday, September 17, 2001 at 8:00 pm in PS141.
  • The link to Friday's lecture notes is fixed.
  • OK, grades are now available. The TAs are still submitting their grades. I have PS1 scores for three sections, RPS scores for one section, no lab grades for any sections and Exam I scores. So do not worry about the '0' place holders at this point. No course percent is available yet and I will not enter a value in that cell until after I have a lab grade. Overall I'm happy with this performance. Great high score. I'll recognize the high score with a special certificate and some swag in class on Friday. Its fun. Average is OK, could be better, but I'm happy. The ideal average would be a 65.
  • I have Six sections entered and the high is 99 and the average is around 61. Not bad!
  • The new grade access form is working. To get your grades you click on our grade link. Your name is the first initial of your first name and your last name as a lowercase string. For example, John Gelder is jgelder. Your password is the SID# that you gave me when you completed the SID form on our web site. If you have any problems send me an e-mail. It is working now but exam grades are not up yet.
  • The Syllabus has been updated to accommodate the 2-week Qualitative Cation Analysis laboratory.
  • Answers to RPS, PS#1 and PS#2 are posted at the Problem Set link. You need Adobe Acrobat Reader to see the answers. If you do not have the Reader get is from Adobe. There is a link at the Plug-ins link on our Web Site.
  • Laboratory for the week of September 3, 2001 is Qualitative Cation Analysis. The experiment write-up for this laboratory was distributed in lecture on Friday, August 31, 2001. If you did not get a copy of this laboratory drop by my office (PS155) to get one. You will not use the laboratory write-up in your CHEM 1515 laboratory manual. However, you must answer the Pre-Laboratory questions on Experiment #2 in your laboratory manual.
  • Problem Set #2 was distributed in lecture on Wednesday, August 29, 2001. If you did not get a PS2 get it at the Problem Set link.
  • BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! CHANGE IN DAY for EXAM 3! Exam 3 has been changed to Wednesday, November 7, 2001 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Originally scheduled for Thursday, November 15, 2001. Due to my travel schedule I leave for Princeton, New Jersey on November 8 and I will not be back until Tuesday, November 14. I do not want to have our 3rd exam scheduled such that I am gone the whole week before the exam, so I've made this change. Please update your calenders. Sorry for the change. All other exam dates are firm.
  • Dr. Materer has been assisting me with a new Grade display page. The new page will only display your individual grade. To access your grades in CHEM 1515 (when I begin posting) you will need an SID#/Name. So be sure to complete the form on our web site to tell me what your SID is.
  • In RPS.6 use Ca(OH)2(s) rather than Ca(OH)2(aq). Instead of Appendix C in Brown, LeMay and Bursten use Appendix B in Silberberg.
  • You should know the cations and anions in Tables 2.3 and 2.5 on pages 67 and 69 in Silberberg.

  • Sitting around with nothing to do? We are going to begin lecture on Wednesday, January 17th discussing Chapter 12 in Silberberg. I recommend you review Chapters 9, 10 and 11 before class. In particular, refresh your recall of drawing Lewis structures, the concept of electronegativity, ionic and covalent bonds, bond polarity, molecular polarity, molecular shape (in particular central atoms with 2, 3 and 4 groups of electrons), valence bond theory, and hybridization.
