Announcements for Wednesday, February 4, 1998

Well I'm having MAJOR computer problems
and I'm not sure if IÕll have the answers up tonight or
not. All of a sudden I can not get my Mac to see the
network, and I do not have anyother means to transfer the
file from my portable (at the moment). I'm very sorry.
I'm headed home to re-install the network software and
see if I can not solve the problem. Hopefully everything
will be working in the morning. Check then.
Here are the Useful
Information sheets for our Exam #1 which is scheduled
for Wednesday, February 4th at 5:30 p.m. in AgH101 or
PS141.
Jason McCollough found a WEB site with a
list of esters and their odors. He recommends going to www.lgboe.edu.on.ca/tiss/stretton/chemistry/chem2/organ08.htm.
This should help for one of the pre-laboratory questions
in this weeks laboratory.
Travis Miller spotted an error in the
answers to PS2.5. In that answer I divided by 2 atoms in
the unit cell instead of multipling. It also looks like I
used the wrong edge length to atomic radius relationship.
The new answer I get is 1.98 x 10-8 cm.
I sense some stress related to Organic.
There is a lot of organic chemistry to learn that is why
two semesters are offered, and it is a junior level
course. I will only expect you to know some survival
organic chemistry. Like if you were marooned on a desert
island with just Brown. Lemay and Bursten. Know how to
name alkanes, alkenes and alkynes and their possible
geometric and structural isomers. And be able to draw
structural and geometric isomers. Relative to functional
groups I just need you to be able to identify them if I
gave you a structure, or that you could write the formula
of a reasonable compound containing the functional group.
I will TRY not to ask weird, strange or otherwise
impossible questions in this area.
In PS3.7 all you need to do is name the
functional group..not the whole compound.
Here are several additional
problems for your preparation for Exam #1.
Next HELP Session will Monday, February
2nd at 7:30 p.m. in PS141. This will be the last HELP
session before the exam. (Do you know which room
to go to for the exam on Wednesday, February 4th at 5:30
p.m.?)
Suggested problems from
Chapter 11:
7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 26, 27, 35,
45, 47, 52, 53, 57, 59, 61, 65, 69, 74, 76, 82,
and 84
Chapter 25
7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 31,
33,and 41
Chapter 13
3, 5, 7, and 9
Next weeks laboratory is the Experiment
#4 in the CHEM1515 laboratory manual. The Preparation of
Aspirin and Oil of Wintergreen: An Organic Synthesis
Experiment.
You will need an official CHEM
1515 Laboratory Manual beginning February 2nd. If
you do not have one check out Cowboy Book.
There are several pre-laboratory
questions which must be completed before arriving
in laboratory/discussion.
This experiment will take
several hours to complete. So as not to cut too
much into the discussion period be sure to read
the experiment carefully before coming to
laboratory so you can move as efficiently as
possible.
There is one suggestion that
will save some time. In Part Three: Analysis of
Commercial Aspirin an aspirin tablet must by
weighed, pulverized and dissolved in 13 mL of
water and 13 mL of ethanol. If you weigh the
tablet at the beginning of the experiment, place
it in the Erlenmeyere flask and add the solvent
the pulverization process will not be necessary.
Since it dissolves slowly it can take its time
while you synthesize your own aspirin.
DO NOT SAMPLE THE STUDENT
QUALITY ASPIRIN YOU PREPARE! YOU ARE NOT A
COMMERCIAL ASPIRIN MANUFACTURER.
One of the pre-laboratory
questions requires a list of 4 common esters and
their odors. Our book is deficient in that
information so you may have to check on the WEB.
You might check the Laboratory
link on this homepage. If I find something I'll
put it there.
The American Institute for Chemical
Engineers is organizing a FREE trip to visit Eastman
Chemical in Longview, TX on Sunday, February 15th and
Monday, February 16th. Sign-up in EN423 and provide a
$5.00 refundable deposit. Transportation and lodging is
free, food may not be provided. Business casual dress
will be appropriate. Contact Cynthia Kuhns (email:kuhns@okstate.edu)
for more information.
I've added PS3,
PS4
and a sample of Exam
#1. Check them out.
College of Arts and Sciences 1998-99
Scholarship Applications are now available. Check with
Dr. G, LSE202 (A&S Student Services) or the Chemistry
Office. No nominations this year, therefore, any student
who meets the eligibility requirements can/should apply.
Deadline for a completed application is February 27th.
Engineering Student Services is offering
FREE Tutoring to CHEM1515 students. From 6:00 p.m to 8:00
p.m. on Tuesday(s) in Drummond 5. If you need more
information contact Dr. Nichols at CEAT Student Services.
In Problem Set #2 there is a typo in
PS2.5 change any reference to titanium to europium.
Hey, if any of you ex girl scouts (boy
scouts too) are separated by space and time from your
regular source of Girl Scout Cookies, I know a local
source. Dr. Lisa Mantini will be delighted to take your
order. Go
to her WEB site for details.
I've responded to all of the SID#
requests. If you have not heard from me let me know.
SCHOLARSHIP INFO: Dr. Robert Graalman
(Director of University Scholarships) is organizing the
Phi Kappa Phi Scholarships for this year's awards. He has
application forms for the sophomore $500 awards (for any
OSU student).
Deadline for the sophomores (current second semester
freshmen) is--near beginning of March. OSU will grant
twelve $500 scholarships. To obtain applications visit
University Scholarships Office 260 SU.
Important
Laboratory issues:
How many
of you out there no how to graph data? Using
Excel? Some other software? If you think
you are going to need some help send me an e-mail
or say something to me in class. We may want to
discuss this during a future HELP Session.
This brings up an important point
that I need to make regarding Pre-laboratory
Questions. These questions MUST be completed before
beginning the laboratory. If they are not completed
when the TA checks them 3 points will automatically
be deducted from the total points you earn for that
particular laboratory experiment. Additionally if any
of the points for that experiment are associated with
the pre-laboratory questions you will also loose
those points. I would predict that a student could
loose from 3 to 5 points for NOT completing the
pre-laboratory questions.
In laboratory this week (Jan 19 -
23) you will receive your locker key (don't lose it)
and check-in. PLU will be by to sell goggles so if
you do not have goggles bring some cash (do they
accept checks?) to purchase a pair of goggles. If you
try to borrow goggles from the storeroom they will
charge you..and you still have to have your own
goggles...so get them in laboratory.
Be sure to take your calculator and
your textbook with you to laboratory. Since the first
50 minutes of the laboratory period is
discussion/problem solving you will want to ask
questions about problem sets and or lecture.
Check out the link to Exams. You will need to
know which classroom to go to for the examinations this
semester. We have two rooms, AgH101 and PS141 (our
classroom). Find out which room your section is assigned.
