In Problem Set #1 problem 8 I recommend
you include the equation for the line (that best fits
your data) on your graph. This will make doing parts c
and d a little easier. Here is how
to draw the best-fit line and display the equation for
the line in Excel. Be sure your graph is properly
labeled. We could grade that problem and if we do I will
assign 1 point to the graph. To be properly labeled the
x- and y-axis must be labeled, the graph should have a
title, and the best straight-line through the data should
be drawn. If you draw the line by hand it does not have
to be perfect, but do not draw a line dot-to-dot.
Hey, if any of you ex girl scouts (boy
scouts too) are separated by space and time from your
regular source of Girl Scout Cookies, I know a local
source. Just e-mail or ask me in class.
If anyone has questions today (Thursday)
drop by my office or send me an e-mail...I'm around.
Remember the Review Problem Set and
Problem Set #1 are both due AT THE BEGINNING of class on
Friday. I will probably accept late problem sets (during
and after class) but I will deduct points from the total
possible. Get to class early so you can turn them in on
time.
I've responded to all of the SID#
requests. If you have not heard from me let me know.
SCHOLARSHIP INFO: Dr. Robert Graalman
(Director of University Scholarships) is organizing the
Phi Kappa Phi Scholarships for this year's awards. He has
application forms for the sophomore $500 awards (for any
OSU student).
Deadline for the sophomores (current second semester
freshmen) is--near beginning of March. OSU will grant
twelve $500 scholarships. To obtain applications visit
University Scholarships Office 260 SU.
I've been thinking about PS1.5. To be
honest that question should be (and is) in the second
problem set, not the first. It slipped into PS1 when I
was not looking. You do not have to answer that question
in PS#1, wait until PS#2. If you have already figured it
out, give yourself a gold star.
You will need some vapor pressure data
for Problem Set #1. Check the Database
directory.
Here is the FREE
Tutoring schedule for Resource Center. CHEM1515 TA's
are in red.
JASON MCCOLLOUGH discovered there are
several errors in the RPS.pdf file which I originally had
on file. I've fixed the errors. If you downloaded this
file you will need to do it again. The corrections are in
RPS.9j - m (page 6). A new copy of the Review
Problem Set is now available or drop by my office for
a copy.
Also in RPS.7. do not worry
about assigning the polarity of NO3-.
An anonymous student also
discover the equation in RPS5a) was not balanced
correctly. The correct equation should be;
N2H4(l) + 2H2O2(l)
----> N2(g) + 4H2O(g)
Problem Set #1 and #2 are also ready.
Get them off the WEB (in the Problem
Set directory) or drop by my office. I'll disribute
PS#2 in class on Monday or Wednesday next week.
Important
Laboratory issues:
How many
of you out there no how to graph data? Using
Excel? Some other software? If you think
you are going to need some help send me an e-mail
or say something to me in class. We may want to
discuss this during a future HELP Session.
I will be handing out copies of
Laboratory #1 Survival Organic Chemistry in
lecture today. If you did not get one on Friday
be sure to get your copy today. There are three
pre-laboratory questions which must be completed for
laboratory this week (Jan 19 - 23).
This brings up an important
point that I need to make regarding
Pre-laboratory Questions. These questions MUST be
completed before beginning the laboratory. If
they are not completed when the TA checks them 3
points will automatically be deducted from the
total points you earn for that particular
laboratory experiment. Additionally if any of the
points for that experiment are associated with
the pre-laboratory questions you will also loose
those points. I would predict that a student
could loose from 3 to 5 points for NOT completing
the pre-laboratory questions.
In laboratory this week (Jan 19
- 23) you will receive your locker key (don't
lose it) and check-in. PLU will be by to sell
goggles so if you do not have goggles bring some
cash (do they accept checks?) to purchase a pair
of goggles. If you try to borrow goggles from the
storeroom they will charge you..and you still
have to have your own goggles...so get them in
laboratory.
Be sure to take your calculator
and your textbook with you to laboratory. Since
the first 50 minutes of the laboratory period is
discussion/problem solving you will want to ask
questions about problem sets and or lecture.
Many of you are sending me e-mail for
your Secret Identification Number. I will respond to your
request in a week or so. I want the class roll to
finalize to some degree before I generate the numbers.
Check out the link to Exams. You will need to
know which classroom to go to for the examinations this
semester. We have two rooms, AgH101 and PS141 (our
classroom). Find out which room your section is assigned.
