You will need QuickTime to view the experiment for this PLE. In this experiment we are going to measure the conductivity of several different solutions. The instrument that measures conductivity uses both visual and auditory response to indicate the how much the solution conducts. Bright flashing lights and high pitched sound means high conductivity. Here are some lecture notes about conductivity if you would like some review, or check your textbook.

Laboratory Section:

1. Adding a soluble solute to water produces a solution. If the solution conducts electricity what does that indicate is presence in solution?

2. In this experiment we will test the conductivity of pure water. List your observations below and offer a short explanation. (NOTE: To access the movie you need to remember CHEM1515 is the username and are password.) Click here for a static image of the measurement.

3. In this experiment we will test the conductivity of solution prepared by mixing NaCl with water. List your observations below and offer a short explanation. (NOTE: To access the movie you need to remember CHEM1515 is the username and are password.) Click here for a static image of the measurement.

4. In this experiment we will test the conductivity of solution prepared by mixing NH3 with water. List your observations below and offer a short explanation. (NOTE: To access the movie you need to remember CHEM1515 is the username and are password.) Click here for a static image of the measurement.

5. In this experiment we will test the conductivity of solution prepared by mixing CH3CH2OH with water. List your observations below and offer a short explanation. (NOTE: To access the movie you need to remember CHEM1515 is the username and are password.) Click here for a static image of the measurement.

6. Based on the observations from the four experiments above make some summary statements about the nature of a compound, when added to water, and its ability to conduct electricity when dissolved in water?

7. Is there anything about conductivity that you feel you do not understand? List your concerns/questions.
