Remember Dr. Gelder will be attending the
American
Chemical Society Meeting in Las Vegas on Monday, September 8th.
NO CLASS. Use the time to work on your problem set.
Since Tammy Graham will also be attending the ACS Meeting she
has indicated she will have her Office Hours on Friday, September
12th from noon to 6:00 p.m. in PS023.
Next week's laboratory (Experiment #1) has been modified and
a new copy will be distributed in laboratory. Go ahead and look at
Experiment #1 in your laboratory manual as some aspects of the new
experiment will be similar. Bring your calculators to laboratory so
you can perform the calculations while you are in lab.
Here are suggested problems from Chapter 1 in your text; 1.1,
1.2, 1.5, 1.7 - 1.10, 1.13, 1.15, 1.17 - 1.30, 1.31, 1.33 - 1.38,
1.41 - 1.50. You do not have to turn these problems in, but you
should look at them as part of your preparation for Exam #1
(Thursday, September 25th)
Memorize the correct spelling
and the element symbols for the first twenty elements in the Periodic
Table as well as other 'common' elements with atomic numbers greater
than 20.
Memorize Tables 2.4 and 2.5 in
the textbook. These tables contain common cations and anions which
will be used when we discuss nomenclature.
I will not award credit for answers only in problems where
calculations are required. If you are ever unsure whether more
explanation is required when answering a problem on the problem set
or an examination please ask.
Problem Set #2 was distributed in class on Wednesday,
September 3rd. Do you know where your copy is?
Some keys were left in our classroom on Wednesday, September
3rd. Did you see them? See Dr. G.
This year celebrates 100 years since the discovery of the
electron (WOW!!). Check out this site to learn
way cool
stuff about the electron.
Here is a way cool
Periodic
Table. You can see the reaction of sodium with water and the
reaction of potassium with water from this site. I know we have not
talked about the Periodic Table yet, but who cares!
Monday, September 8th, is the last to drop a course with no
grade and no fee payment. Student will still be able to add a class
between, Wednesday, September 3rd and Monday, September 8th with the
instructor's permission.
