To answer this question it is critical that you know (memorized) and understand (that's harder) definitions which I have given in class (and are in your textbook).

Here are the terms I need you to know..do you know them? For each of the following definitions try to write down an answer before going to the Answer link. If you do not know a simple definition for many of the terms take some time to review the definitions from your textbook, our lecture notes or your lecture notes before continuing. I've expanded on the simple definitions to try to provide additional information to give you some insight to applying these ideas to ICE1.5.

Define the following terms;

a) atom Answer

b) molecule Answer

c) element Answer

d) compound Answer

e) gas Answer

f) liquid Answer

g) solid Answer

h) pure substance Answer

i) heterogeneous mixture Answer

j) homogeneous mixture Answer

So you must put all this information together when you look at each of the 16 diagrams in the InClass Exercise ICE1.5 so that you classify each diagram as to whether it shows a mixture (heterogeneous or homogeneous) or a pure substance; an element, a compound or both and the state of the substances in the diagram.

I want you to be able to look at such diagrams and provide the classification, or if I gave you a particular classification you could draw a diagram.

What would a sample of the element bromine look like using such a diagram? Answer
