Chapter 11: Introduction to Modern Atomic Theory
This is an energy level diagram because we see the
levels are distributed one above the other, and the
difference in separation between each subsequent pair of
levels is getting closer together.
This energy level diagram shows the levels, sublevels
and orbitals as defined by the Quantum Mechanical model
of the hydrogen atom.
The energy level diagram for the Bohr model is much
simpler. Since the Bohr Model only defined the electron
as occuping a level (orbit).
In the Quantum Mechanical model of the hydrogen atom
the electron is in an orbital...a three dimensional
region of space where the probability of finding the
electron is high. In the Quantum mechanical model the
electron behaves a wave, not as a particle as it does in
the Bohr Model.
