Here are some sample exams from previous CHEM 1215 course I
have taught.
Exam I Spring, 2000
Will cover Chapters 2, 3 and 4, Problem Sets 1, 2 and 3,
InClass Problem Sets 1 and 2, Lecture notes through Monday,
January 31, 2000, and Laboratory #1. In Chapter 2 all you are
responsible for all sections, Chapter 3 all but section 3.6, and
in Chapter 4 all but sections 4.5 - 4.7 and 4.10 - 4.11.
Exam II Spring, 2000
Will cover;
Chapter 3 Section 3.5 and 3.6;
Chapter 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.
In Chapter 7, Section 7.3 will not be covered on Exam
II. This section covers ionic and net ionic equations.
In Chapter 8, Section 8.1 discusses formation
reactions and discusses how to write the formulas for
ionic compounds. We've done this. The section also
introduces the term oxidation-reduction. I've not used
this term, so you do not have to be familiar with it. But
you must be able to predict the formula of any formation
reaction involving a metal and a nonmetal. The remaining
sections of Chapter 8 summarize the different reactions
we've discussed. Note in Section 8.3 Zumdahl mentions
synthesis or combination reactions. These reaction are
what I've called formation reactions.
Problem Sets 4, 5, 6 and 7, InClass Problem Sets for
2/14, 2/17, 2/21 and 2/24.
Lecture notes from February 7, 2000 to Friday,
February 25, 2000 and Laboratory #7 and #2.
Exam III Spring, 2000
Will cover;
First two problems on the exam are like the first two
problems on the last several problem sets....chemical
reactions, ionic and net ionic equations. This material
is covered in Chapters 6, 7 and 8 in Zumdahl. Section 7.3
discusses ionic and net ionic equations.
Chapter 9 and 10.
You are NOT responsible for sections 10.4 and 10.5 in
Zumdahl.
Problem Sets 8, 9 10l, 11 and 12, InClass Problem
Sets for 3/27.
Lecture notes from March 7, 2000 to Wednesday, March
29, 2000 and Laboratory 6, 9 and 11.
