How to determine Exam IV and V scores for a
particular grade
Determine what grade you want to earn in the class then
calculate the total number of points your will need to earn out
of the maximum possible of 900. See the table below.

Points are earned from your exams, your laboratories and your
homework. To calculate what you will need to do on Exam IV and V
to earn a particular grade, first choose the grade you want to
earn in the class, the add up your first three exam scores and
subtract from this number,
calc #1: points
for your grade - sum of Exam I, II and III
Now determine your total number of points from
homework (check your scores on the WEB), divide by the maximum
possible then multiply by 200 and subtract from the points
determined in the calc. #1.
calc #2: calc #1
- (sum of your HW scores/maximum possible)*200
Now determine your total number of points from
laboratory (check your scores on the WEB), divide by the maximum
possible then multiply by 200 and subtract from the points
determined in the calc. #2.
calc #3: calc #2
- (sum of your LAB scores/maximum possible)*200
This number is the number of points you must
earn on Exam IV and V for the particular grade.
This calculation you just performed assumed no
homework scores or lab scores were dropped. You can recalculate
your grades based on dropping the lowest homework and the two
lowest laboratories to see what the difference is. The
calculation becomes;
calc #1: points
for your grade - sum of Exam I, II and III
Now determine your total number of points from
the 13 highest homework scores (check your scores on the WEB),
divide by 168 then multiply by 200 and subtract from the points
determined in the calc. #1.
calc #2: calc #1
- (sum of your 13 highest HW scores/168)*200
Now determine your total number of points from
your 9 highest laboratory scores (check your scores on the WEB),
divide by 135 then multiply by 200 and subtract from the points
determined in the calc. #2.
calc #3: calc #2
- (sum of your 9 highest LAB scores/135)*200
This number is the number of points you must
earn on Exam IV and V for the particular grade.

Based on this students performance we'll check
the possiblity of earning a 'B' and a 'C' in the class. Lets do a
'C' first;
calc #1: 495 -
171 = 324
Now determine your total number of points from
homework (check your scores on the WEB), divide by the maximum
possible then multiply by 200 and subtract from the points
determined in the calc. #1.
calc #2: 324 -
(83/120)*200 = 324 - 138 = 186
Now determine your total number of points from
laboratory (check your scores on the WEB), divide by the maximum
possible then multiply by 200 and subtract from the points
determined in the calc. #2.
calc #3: 186 -
(120/135)*200 = 186 - 178 = 8
This student needs to earn 8 points on exam IV
and exam V for a 'C' in the class.
Lets do a 'B' next;
calc #1: 675 -
171 = 504
Now determine your total number of points from
homework (check your scores on the WEB), divide by the maximum
possible then multiply by 200 and subtract from the points
determined in the calc. #1.
calc #2: 504 -
(83/120)*200 = 504 - 138 = 366
Now determine your total number of points from
laboratory (check your scores on the WEB), divide by the maximum
possible then multiply by 200 and subtract from the points
determined in the calc. #2.
calc #3: 186 -
(120/135)*200 = 366 - 178 = 188
This student needs to earn 188 points on exam IV
and exam V for a 'B' in the class. Notice there are still 5
problem set score and 2 laboratory scores that are unknown, PLUS
the lowest problem set and the two lowest laboratory scores are
to be dropped.
We must still wait for the outstanding problem
set and laboratory scores but at least we have an idea of what
this student must do for a 'C' and a 'B' in the class. When all
the grades are reported the student will be able to re-calculate
their scores to see what they must do for the grade.
