In this PLE we are going to continue discussion of spontaneity, free energy and entropy. (NOTE: If you can not answer a question below enter CNA.)

Give me some responses to the questions below and I'll give you some extra credit.

SID#: (Use your Secret Idenitifcation Number)

Laboratory Section:

1. For a chemical reaction what is the sign of H that favors spontaneity? Explain

2. For a chemical reaction what is the sign of S that favors spontaneity? Explain

3. An equation we will discuss in class on Wednesday, January 23rd is

G = H - TS

G is called the Free Energy for a chemical reaction and is the thermodynamic term that defines spontaneity. Based on your responses in Q1 and Q2 above, what is the sign of G (+ or -) for a spontaneous reaction? Explain.

4. What is the sign of G (+ or -) for a nonspontaneous reaction? Explain.

5. Assume for a particular reaction the sign of H is positive (+) and the sign for S is positive (+). Is this reaction spontaneous or nonspontaneous? Explain.

6. Is there anything about the questions that you feel you do not understand? List your concerns/questions.
