AP Summer Institute in Calculus at OSU July 7 - 11, 2003

The Instructors:

Joe Milliet, St. Mark's School of Texas

John Wolfe, Professor of Mathematics, Oklahoma State University

The Institute

The goal of the Institute is to increase participants' knowledge and experiences with content, pedagogy, assessment, and technology in AP Calculus.

The topics of the Institute will be: functions, graphs, and limits; rate of change and the concept of the derivative; the concept of the integral, including the integral as accumulated change of a rate of change; and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Guided explorations will be used extensively throughout the Institute to help participants discover and learn the fundamental concepts of calculus. These Institute activities will provide participants with a valuable resource when they, in turn, are AP teachers responsible for student learning in AP Calculus. AP assessment issues will also be featured during the Institute, including a review of selected past AP exam questions and the application of AP scoring guidelines to student work. Institute assessment activities will provide teachers with additional content and pedagogy insights into the learning and teaching of calculus. The materials for this Institute will include AP publications of the College Board and specially prepared handouts by Mr. Milliet and Dr. Wolfe.

The Institute will also feature TI-83 Plus graphing calculators. The emphasis will be on the graphing calculator as a tool for the teaching and learning of calculus concepts. Graphing calculators will be provided for use during the Institute, but participants who own graphing calculators are encouraged to bring them to be able to copy and take back useful programs for their calculator.

Concurrent sessions will be used in the Institute to accommodate greater variety of AP Calculus coverage to participants of different levels of AP experience and interest. There will be sessions for teachers new to AP Calculus, for experienced AP teachers, for teachers interested in Pre-AP issues, and for teachers interested in BC Calculus topics and issues.
