Dear AP Institute Participants;

This is a note to let you know Valerie and I are looking forward to seeing everyone on the 9th of July here in Stillwater. At this moment there are 27 participants signed up with a few others that I've talked to. So a nice group. Over half the group have zero to one year of experience teaching AP. We have a busy scheduled planned.

The first day we will meet in AgH202 (I'll locate that building and have a link on our web site, intro.chem.okstate.edu). Our size and space needs have pushed us out of the Chemistry building. I think this room will be great as it will allow you to spread your materials out a little without crowding your neighbor. In the afternoon on Monday weÕll do some laboratories. The evening of the first day we will have a picnic with the other AP Institute participants (AP Calculus). After the picnic we will go to a computer laboratory to look at some cool software I want everyone to see and allow some time to do some Web surfing. At that time IÕd also encourage you to share any of your favorite web sites with the other teachers. If youÕd like to send the links to me before we meet I can prepare a list to distribute to everyone.

Tuesday through Thursday will be much like Monday. I expect the newbies will have lots of questions about organizing and administering an AP course. So I think one of the evening, possibly Tuesday, we should set aside some time to meet in small groups several new teachers with some experienced teachers to share ideas.

I recommend you bring your AP text book with you to the Institute. While we will be giving you some textbooks, complements of several publishers, if everyone brings theirs you can better match up in the small groups. A recommendation from an experienced AP teacher to new teachers is to start reading your textbook now, and doing the problems at the end of the chapter. While doing that keep track of the problems and the sections in the text you want your students to do and read. Look over past AP exams so you can see what material the exam covers and the kind of problems that are asked.When we meet in July one of the things we will do will be to discuss this yearÕs exam and talk about places students had difficulties.

We are in newer housing facilities this year and I do not know all the details. But if you prefer using a towel larger than a face cloth (a slight exageration) you might bring your own. If you have a favorite pillow bring that. Be careful about bringing too many luxury items as the University will not be responsible for lost or stolen items. You might also need hangers and a reading lamp. If anyone has suggestions based on their experience traveling to AP Institutes send me an e-mail and I'll post the suggestions.

I will be out of town for the next week, so I may be a little slow responding to e-mail messages or voicemail. But I will respond. If your plans change, preventing you from attending the Institute, please let me know ASAP so I can communicate that information to housing. See you in two weeks.

John and Valerie.
