Experiment 9: Fats and Cholesterol Week of October 11, 1999

PART FIVE: Cold Cream

Weigh 2.00 grams of beeswax into a 50 mL beaker and then place on the hot plate to begin melting the sample.

Weigh 7.5 g of mineral oilinto a 10 mL graduate cylinder and add it to the melted beeswax.

Heat this mixture to 70 degree C. Be careful not to overheat. So keep an eye on this mixture as it heats.

Weigh 0.125 g of borax into a 50 mL beaker and then add 3.5 mL of distilled water.

Heat this solution to 70 degrees C on the hot plate also.

When the mixtrues reach 70 degrees C, gradually add the borax solution to the oil-wax mixture with rapid stirring.

Remove the beaker from the hot plate and allow emulsion to cool. After the sample has cooled test whether the sample can remove eye make-up. Do not test on make-up you currently are wearing. This is STUDENT QUALITY COLD CREAM! Find a volunteer (where dr. g when you need him!?) and put some eye make-up on the back of the volunteer's hands. test removal using water on one hand and the cold cream on the other. Record your observations on the Results page. Be kind to the volunteer!
